One of the key components of DXBDW, Abwab returns for its third incarnation. The influential showcase for design from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia continues its dynamic approach to bringing design thinking to life.
Abwab is DXBDW’s key event for highlighting regional design talent. For the third edition of Abwab the show will feature a collective space for the presentation of the freshest talent, with pieces selected through an innovative peer-selection process, ‘design domino’ whereby on submitting an object for display designers are required to nominate a designer they admire. The final selection of products will be informed by a high-profile international editorial board.
The Abwab pavilion, which will be placed at the centre of d3 has been designed by Dubai-based Fahed & Architects using recovered bedsprings borrowed from waste management company Be’aah. This stunning structure will provide an outstanding backdrop for Abwab’s hallmark of providing a heavily curated snapshot of contemporary designers and products from across the region.
Living up to its name (Abwab translates as ‘doors’) the show will provide visitors with a unique insight into techniques, materials and craft from a series of studios across from over 10 countries: Previous editions of Abwab have featured designs from Algeria, Bahrain, India, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the UAE. This year will showcase the greatest diversity of countries together with designers brought to light by their local creative community.
