BYAHE: A TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION, held during Dubai Design Week
‘Byahe’ by design studio Ape Creative will be held at FN Designs, Alserkal Avenue as part of forthcoming Dubai Design Week. The exhibition explores the culture and the craft of hand painted lettering on signage and is a celebration of that slowly dying, often overlooked, craft.
The core inspiration for ‘Byahe’ (a Filipino word for “Travel”) arose out of a fascination with the iconic hand painted signage typically found on vehicles in the Philippines.
Using elements of typography and design on signage, Ape Creative examines how people connect through their stories, their travels and experiences.
‘Byahe’ aims to detach visitors from digital technology and reconnect them back to the more authentic; an authenticity rooted in history, heritage and a sense of place. ‘Byahe’ also hopes to bring a fresh perspective to the Philippine culture through its art and design while also connects with other cultures from around the world.
Ape Creative brings a variety of hand painted signage on several metal plates which will be displayed as a whole installation art piece, with two short films alongside. Visitors can get involved in talks and workshops related to the exhibition, as well as purchase personalised “Byahe” typographic designs.
Ape Creative was founded by Rollan Rodriguez in Dubai in 2014.
BYAHE: A TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION opens 24 to 29 October 2016, at FN Designs, Alserkal Avenue.
