Breaking Boundaries: Redefining Design with Karim Rashid

In a dynamic keynote, Industrial designer Karim Rashid will take the stage for the first time at Downtown Design to share insight into his design philosophy.

Karim Rashid is a prolific designer with over 4,000 designs in production and more than 300 awards, recognized in over 40 countries. His work includes luxury items for Christofle and Alessi, democratic products for Umbra and 3M, furniture for Bonaldo, and lighting for Artemide. He also designs interiors, notably for the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and the nhow hotel in Berlin.

Rashid's work is included in 20 permanent collections and he has received numerous accolades, including the Red Dot Award and the I.D. Magazine Annual Design Review. He frequently lectures on design's significance in daily life and holds Honorary Doctorates from OCAD, Toronto, and Corcoran College of Art & Design, Washington.

His publications include XX; 400 pages of work selected from the last 20 years (Design Media Publishing, 2015), From The Beginning; an oral history of Karim’s life and inspiration (Forma, 2014), Sketch; featuring 300 hand drawings (Frame Publishing, 2011), and Design Your Self; Karim’s guide to living (Harper Collins, 2006), among others. Rashid also explores art, fashion, and music in his personal pursuits.

In this talk, Karim Rashid will be in conversation with New York City-based design and culture journalist and author, Rima Suqi, who contributes to The New York Times, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Elle Decor and many others. Half Palestinian, the Chicago native has followed Karim’s career and style evolution for over two decades, and first wrote his work for The New York Times in 2011.
