Experience the ambiance of Old Dubai through a 6-day exhibition including live talks and demos, a product design exhibition, short film screenings and cultural tours at Alserkal Cultural Foundation in the heart of Al Bastakiya.
Opening on November 13, the cultural heart of Emirati tradition will take part in the design events taking place across the city. Alserkal Cultural Foundation’s week programme will include an exhibition of works by Khashab, Wildwood and Akin-Be, and an interactive Meet & Greet with the participating designers with guided tours of the foundation. Alserkal Cultural Foundation's food and beverage partner, Make Art Café, will serve refreshments.
Visitors can also join Arash Kavoosi of Arash Leather as he explains the benefits and traditional uses of natural camel leather, followed by a live demonstration of sketching, cutting, and stitching, showing how an Arash bag is made from camel leather.
Industry specialists can get insight from Andre C. Meyerhans as he explains the contemporary design language of his work. Exploring the idea of a universal principle and where lies potential and where are the limitations? In his talk: discovering contemporary design language. Juxtapiece designers Arghavan Hatamabadi and Hanin Hazeem will talk about their start up in ‘From ordinary to extraordinary’. The talk is aimed at design enthusiasts aged 18 to 50 who are interested in handcrafting and product design.
In addition, the foundation will be screening a short film on the woodturning process by Ayman Gharib.
The 15-minute film will explore various aspects of the process from picking the right wood, to the machinery and tools involved in the craft.
City wanderers can take an Architectural tour through Bastakiya with Andre C. Meyerhansas the Designer and architect explores the history and house typologies of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, and explains the value of historic districts and how to best keep them alive.
