From the center, he will focus on Raku and Naked Raku firing, working on creating a body of new work informed by the process. Raku was initially created in Japan and involves removing work from the kiln at temperatures as high as 950 C and placing in combustable materials to create an unmistakable aesthetic.

I’m really enjoying working here in Bali. It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit and to indulge my passion for ceramics while exploring and being inspired by the incredibly rich surroundings of this island paradise. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Michael.

Michael will work alongside international professional ceramicists, Lauren Mabry from the USA and Bruce McWhinney from Australia.

An Irish Artist, based in the UAE. Michael has a Degree in Fine Craft Design, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Art and Design), and a Masters Degree in Multi Disciplinary Design. Michael's work is concerned with form, texture, surface and presence and has been exhibited internationally. As well as a practicing professional ceramicist, he is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at the American University in Dubai.

Michael has participated in Design Week’s previous editions, demonstrating the process of working with clay and resulting ceramic art. His activities for 2017 will be announced in the coming months.
