Dubai Design week presents endless opportunities for the design enthusiasts in all of us, from students, industry professionals to the design curious, there are events for everyone to take part in in all corners of the city.

At the Making Space, visitors can get their hands dirty, and get involved in the design process. The venue will host a range of creative activities that bring the design process to life with drop-in demonstrations and workshops. The line-up of activities has been organised by a dedicate group of designers and makers, including Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children – who will be running workshops printing, paper-making and pottery among other things. MASKA will bring to life the art of wrapping with fabric, thejamjar is running a session on contemporary weaving, Urban Sketchers will lead workshops on making and capturing architectural features and Tashkeel is running a two day course teaching the fundamentals and basics of typography and lettering. Also look out for Klug Toys who, along with their local design partners, will be giving insight into making Arabic educational games. Be it modelling, folding, sculpting, weaving or sketching the Making space will be a fun, interactive part of the Dubai Design Week experience.

IKEA will present let’s play for change, an arena designed to transport you to another world filled with wonder, delight, mystical illusions and more. The exhibition features captivatingly designed elements to mesmerize kids, teenagers and grown-ups to engage in play.

At the Global Grad Show, student design comes to the forefront of design, showcasing the endless possibilities of the field, and sure to awe-inspire the design enthusiast in all. From aspiring students to the design-inclined, the show is a window into the most unique design projects that aim to be answers to the world’s most pressing issues.

For students looking into exploring the field of design, DIDI will be presenting workshops to prepare students to build their portfolio’s to apply for design programmes, as well as a talk by DIDI’s Sass Brown on future design careers, and the options to prepare for the careers of the future.

55FIFTY7 The Diamond StudioIn association with IGI (International Gemological Institute), 55FIFTY7 will host two educational seminars aimed at young jewellery enthusiasts from the age of 7. Throughout Design Week, L’ecole Van Cleef & Arpels The Dubai edition of the nomadic school will offer 14 adult classes around three broad themes: Savoir-Faire (know-how), Art History of Jewels, and The Universe of Gemstones; as well as five creative workshops for children and adolescents, ages 5 to 16.

For those wanting to cross new pastures, they can join in on tours from Mirzam who will be providing visitors with tours of the chocolate making process to an architectural tour through bastakiya with andre C. Meyerhans, hosted by the Alserkal cultural foundation.

While in the area, visitors can explore the traditional quarter in the city, experiencing the ambiance of Old Dubai through a 6-day exhibition at the Alserkal cultural foundation including live talks and demos, a product design exhibition, short film screenings and cultural tours.

On the weekend, The Ripe Design Market brings the region’s finest local start-ups, small businesses comprising of designers, trend-setters, taste-makers and culinary artisans together to the premises of Dubai Design District (d3) to showcase their work.
