Dubai Design Week Portraits

Dubai Design Week Portraits is a film series commissioned in the lead up to Dubai Design Week 2015 profiling some of the many players involved in the inaugural event: a 6-day celebration of ground-breaking ideas and design discovery, 26-31 October 2015.

Over the coming weeks, Dubai Design Week Portraits will feature:

Waleed Shalaan, curator of Kuwaiti Abwab pavilion talks about his role as curator of the Kuwaiti design pavilion under Dubai Design Week initiative, ‘Abwab’. Integrated into the walkways of Dubai Design District (d3), Abwab sees six pavilions given over to designers and curators from Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the UAE. Under the theme of Games: The Element of Play in Culture, it will celebrate the MENASA region’s diverse creative thinking.

Moza Almatrooshi, curator of ‘Wasl’, the first international exhibition of design from the United Arab Emirates which took place at Beijing Design Week in September 2015 as part of the Guest City Dubai programme, a reciprocal cultural agreement with Dubai Design Week. Conceived as a touring exhibition to give a global platform to UAE-based design, ‘Wasl’ at Beijing Design Week 2015 was staged in partnership with Dubai Design Week, Dubai Design District (d3), Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Falcon and Associates, as well as art and design institutions Tashkeel and 1971 – Design Space

Hamza Omari, industrial designer of Dubai-based Loci Architecture & Design Studio, the architecture and design studio behind pavilions that will form Dubai Design Week’s ‘Abwab’ initiative.

Product designer Khalid Shafar, fashion designer Khulood Thani and jewellery designer Nadine Kanso: founding members of new design movement, Design Ras Al Khor (DRAK), which launches during Dubai Design Week

Lara Assouad, independent graphic and type designer with a particular interest in the relation between Arabic and Latin writing systems and multicultural identities who will lead a hands-on Workshop during Dubai Design Week on Modular Arabic Letters

Latifa Saeed and Talin Hazbar, graduates of the Tashkeel Design Programme on their Earth Hives installation exploring Emirati culture
