Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation will be having various events from a Portfolio Building Workshop to prepare high school students with the required skills to build a strong portfolio for admission to a design programme, to a talk by Sass Brown, DIDI’s Founding Dean, and Associate Dean Hani Asfour, addressing aspiring students about the diverse design career options.
AUE will be holding a conference on design in a digital world, bringing together researchers and practitioners to explore, evaluate, and present creative work and research results on the future of design, the impact of digital technology and design education in a digital world. The university will also be organizing TYPEUNITE Dubai 2017, an International Typographic Poster Design Exhibition, and bringing together students’ works from UAE, Turkey, USA, South Korea, Indonesia, Ecuador, Denmark, Poland, China and Switzerland.
AUD will be holding three exhibitions: Smoke & Dirt, The Art of Technology, Archist City. ‘Smoke & Dirt’ is an exhibition showcasingProfessor Michael Rice’s work following his recent residency and research in Bali, focusing on Raku, Naked Raku and Saggar firing. ‘The Art of Technology’, a students’ exhibition, will be presenting projection mapping, and ‘The Archist City’ will consist of a series of 3D illustrations that explore the intersection of art, culture, and architecture in a visually striking compilation, finding a middle ground between modern urbanization, visual design, and popular culture.
In addition to his exhibition, AUD’s Professor Michael Rice will hold a Raku and Naked Raku workshop, demonstrating the firing techniques and process of the Raku kiln, a Japanese ceramics technique invented in the 16th century for a tea ceremony in Kyoto. The university will also be having a talk on Art, objects & material culture by Magdalene Odundo Obe, an international ceramic artist.
Up for a fun challenge? Join the DXB Design Hunt, led by architecture and interior design undergraduates Maral Berenjian, Noor Alsaqqa, and Hadeel Hisham for fellow students. The hunt will create an architecture and design map of Dubai, and define the aesthetic and the visual sensibility of the city. The participants will learn design-thinking, digital documentation, observational skills, and teamwork through the challenge.
Attend Design Talks @ Heriot Watt University, hosted by Mr. Bruce Paget and Ms. Linsey D Thomson, Interior Design programme, to experiment with strategies that could improve and create innovative shelter “design” and inspire solutions to similar problems.
If you are interested in sustainable design, join the workshop for emerging green designers by Professor Camilo Cerro, Daniel Chavez and Juan Roldan in AUS, designed to foster awareness around sustainability. Participants will create a designed object by using and reshaping only recycled materials including scrap wood and plywood.
