A LOOK BEHIND ABWAB: UAE PAVILION

The focus of the UAE Abwab pavilion at Dubai Design Week is childhood; that which should be filled with play and a wonderfully free aversion to rules and regulations to allow young imaginations to take flight.

All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy.

The focus of the UAE Abwab pavilion at Dubai Design Week is childhood; that which should be filled with play and a wonderfully free aversion to rules and regulations to allow young imaginations to take flight. Under the curation of Dubai’s Mobius Design Studio, the UAE pavilion will feature a diversity of games through the character of ‘Jack’ as he experiences play within the concept of time.

These include:
• Handcrafted fabrics woven into graphic stories, stretched as paravans. The project plays with the opacity of woven fabrics and the resulting shadows which exhibit snap-shots of past Emirati society
• A universal game reinterpreted: a wheel and palm stalk stick. Multiplied and integrated into a mechanism to amplify the sounds produced when the wheels are struck, the intention is to create an audio experience that targets memory. As visitors draw closer, the faster the wheels spin and the louder the sounds become
• A digital mirror reflecting one's image, where time is stalled ever so slightly…just enough for the viewer to truly see themselves
• A photographic account of improvised play-spaces in Dubai turned into posters, temporary places with everlasting effects
