Ethical design is at the centre of Royal College of Arts graduate Cal Craven’s Luxury Exploration Yacht which will be exhibited at Global Grad Show, 26-31 October.
The design for the 68-metre environmentally conscious watercraft arose as a response to the statistic that the average super yacht owner uses their ship for just one month per year: how could that same yacht be used to benefit society in its spare time?
Craven’s Luxury Exploration Yacht, entitled Orion’s Belt, is an environmental explorer that is able to conduct research and clean the ocean. The design raises the possibility of a new form of luxury that is interwoven with sustainability.
The yacht features a hangar bay that provides an essential component for exploration and, when the ship passes floating debris, two large arms funnel plastic into the rear of the hull for recycling – either onboard via a 3D printer or at a processing plant. Craven proposes that his design could help tackle the blight of excess plastics in the world’s waterways, such as the Great Pacific garbage patch.
This design for good at Dubai Design Week’s Global Grad Show is just one example of how the designers of tomorrow are creating innovative ideas and products that are not only beautiful but will enrich our lives.
