On Wednesday 26 October, Dubai Design Week will host a day dedicated to Emirati and Islamic Design at d3.

Yasser Elsheshtawy, curator of the National Pavilion UAE at the 2016 Venice Biennial, hosts a Curating Architecture Master class and a Q&A with Adina Hempel, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Zayed University, on the new publication Transformations: The Emirati National House. The master class explores the process of putting together an architectural exhibition looking at the following: theme development; content research; exhibition design; content design. Seats are limited and pre-registration is essential.

In his illustrated keynote speech Reviving Master Craftsmanship, Art Historian Abdul Karim Crites who has lived and worked in India and across the Islamic world for more than forty years discusses his work over the last fifty years with thousands of master artists, carvers, inlay artisans and calligrapher on mosques around the world. Passionate about the revival of traditional Indian and Islamic arts and crafts, Crites will discuss the impact these buildings have had on the revival of endangered art and craft traditions

Following his keynote speech, Abdul Karim Crites will join a distinguished and lively panel to discuss Contemporary Practices of Islamic Design from the preserved traditional to the reinvented modern. The panel includes Manal Ataya, Director-General of Sharjah Museums Department; Islamic geometric design specialist and author Eric Broug; Dr. Farouk Yaghmour, lead architect behind the Spine mosque on the Palm Jumeriah; and moderated by Dr. Woodman Taylor, chair of American University in Dubai’s department of visual communication.
