caravan, the Dubai-based multi-disciplinary design collective, presents ORI-GEN, a design performance conceived especially for Dubai Design Week as part of the citywide celebration of ideas, innovation and creativity, 26-31 October.
Hosted by thejamjar, in partnership with Alserkal Avenue in E46, the production weaves body gestures and generative origami design, aiming to involve the audience in an interactive setting that continuously transforms and evolves.
Says Ivan Parati, (Indust)real Designer of caravan design collective: “Ori-Gen will be a one of a kind performance that blends design and dance, so far nothing like this has been conceived.”
ORI-GEN consists of magnetic modules, which when aggregated generate geometric compositions and structures. Performers from the UAE-based The Ripple Effect, a conceptual dance production house, will create diverse environments linking the pattern of their movements to different rhythms and emotions, while engaging with the audience in a collaborative act.
The production is inspired by the impermanence and flexibility of nature. For in nature nothing is lost, nothing is created and everything is transformed; everything runs on the edge of a fragile and ephemeral balance.
Beyond its artistic and expressive application, ORI-GEN is conceived to be a versatile multipurpose furniture piece that could become divider, enclosure, lighting or other fixture – such is its dynamism, interactivity, adaptability and practicality.
Blending digital-fabrication and artisanal expertise, ORI-GEN, as with all caravan’s projects, aim to awaken the designer in every one of us and is certain to add an interesting and much-talked-about dimension to the Dubai Design Week programme.
