REFORMING TERRACOTTA

Continuing on last year’s exploration of terracotta material, Talin Hazbar and Latifa Saeed collaborate once more during Dubai Design Week (24 - 29 October) to create Left Impression - another project in their material exploration of terracotta. The duo first met during the 2014-15 Tanween programme and, in conjunction, decided to pursue their projects through a 40-year old terracotta factory located in the Northern Emirates.

Left Impression will be the third collaboration with the terracotta factory, the designers adding, “Our design practice is based on exploring and investigating materials. We specifically focused on highlighting the craft of terracotta wheel throwing and decided to create an installation that reflects this craft.”

After their first encounter with the terracotta craftsmen, Talin and Latifa were inspired to deconstruct the highly malleable terracotta objects - exploring the possible distortion, deformation, and disfiguration.

This year’s project is a seating installation inspired by the Emirati Majlis - a site where family, neighbours, and members of a community gather, a major facet of social life in the UAE, to discuss any variety of topics. With Left Impression, the duo aims to create a focal point and gathering space for the design community to interact with the installation.

Each individual stool was created through a process of deforming the geometry of the original form, the designers then added unique imprints to each unit. The process of deforming the material remained to be a unique struggle in itself, challenging the factory workers and their techniques on how to achieve the precise malformation through a wheel throwing process.
