'WASL' the first exhibition of design from the Emirates opens in 2 weeks, as part of the Dubai Guest City programme at this year’s Beijing Design Week, September 23 until October 7. The exhibition is staged in partnership with Dubai Design Week, Dubai Design District, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Falcon and Associates, as well as art and design institutions Tashkeel, and 1971 – Design Space.
Curator of 'WASL', Mouza Almatrooshi on the subchapters she has used within the exhibition: “'WASL' is presented as subchapters - NatureStates, Domesticity and UrbanMetropolis – that signify the main facets of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates’ identity. These subchapters highlight certain characteristics that the designers often grapple onto, not only to draw inspiration from, but also to preserve their cultural essences. The designers’ areas of interest explore the natural landscapes of the United Arab Emirates, as well as enter the domestic lives of its residents; and expose the responses and statements of the designers to their rapidly shifting metropolis.”
NatureStates consists of the environmental components that contributed to the designer’s inspiration for their work. The pieces that fall under this category span the desert, the rugged and remote mountainous areas, the coastal landscape, and the palm tree oases.
Domesticity unveils objects and design methods that were implemented on objects that refer to traditional domestic customs that are either still carried out today or have fell into endangerment.
UrbanMetropolis expresses the responses of the designers to the issues that occur in their modernized cityscape.
