What’s Your Love Story?

Have you ever wondered what your thoughts and emotions look like – a scrambled mess or a serene ocean? And what of love? The Love Project, a Dubai Design Week installation, captures the emotions people feel in relating personal love stories to transform them into mandalas.

Have you ever wondered what your thoughts and emotions look like – a scrambled mess or a serene ocean? And what of love? The Love Project, a Dubai Design Week installation, captures the emotions people feel in relating personal love stories to transform them into mandalas.

Designed by Estúdio Guto Requena, in collaboration with D3 (Brazil), The Love Project is a study in design, science and technology. The architects’ work draws on the thought that love stories are memories; sometimes in the form of images, sometimes as soundtracks, with rhythms dictated by our mind through experiences.

These scenes and tracks of memory are built and driven by our invisible inner musical instruments, composing melodies that guide and engage our way of looking at our world of senses.

Through The Love Project, sensors applied to participants read subtle reactions, while they tell the defining love story of their own lives. As participants speak in privacy, data drawn from their changing emotions is relayed to purpose-built software. Through a graphic interface, this data moulds every aspect of a mandala, which is then fabricated using a 3D printer. Real time projections will also show the emotional data collected by the sensors and the formal result into mandalas.

The Love Project brings meaning and personal memories to everyday objects. Through the narratives of love, the project suggests a future in which unique products will bear personal histories in ways that encourage long life cycles, thus inherently combining deeply meaningful works with sustainable design.
