The film program will open with a special screening ofMY MIC SOUNDS NICE: A TRUTH ABOUT WOMEN IN HIP HOPby Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay which explores the history and the legacy of the women emcees during the heyday of Hip-Hop and the pioneers like Roxanne Shanté to MC Lyte to Queen Latifa who helped invent and nurture the genre.

Synopsis
Word Is Bond, a documentary by Sacha Jenkins (Fresh Dressed), examines the transformative power of lyrics in the world of Hip-Hop music, exploring the many dimensions that hip-hop poetics from Nas to Rapsody to Tech9 occupy. What was born on the streets of the South Bronx has now taken root globally, and the young poets of New York have helped to spawn regional dialects everywhere. Through dynamic archival footage, in-depth interviews and verite excursions with artists like Nas, Tech9, J Cole, Rapsody and Anderson .Paak (and many more), Word explores the many dimensions that hip hop poetics occupy.

SYNOPSIS
The ultimate femcee doc, this film by Academy Award Nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma, The 13th), features prominent female MCs and industry icons speaking candidly about the important historical and defining role of women in the early days of Hip-Hop to the issues they face today. MC Lyte, Yo Yo, Trina, Salt-n-Pepa, Eve, Lil' Mama, Roxanne Shanté, Missy Elliott share their individual experiences as female MCs in hip hop. From the sexualized exploitation of female artists to the trailblazing role of specific female artists responsible for paving the way for other women in Hip Hop down the line. The film also features Questlove of the Roots, Swizz Beatz, Jazze Phe, Russell Simmons on the limitations facing women in the industry to the force that is Nicki Minaj and a new wave of femcees. The film was nominated for a Black Reel Award for Best Documentary in 2011.
