The ultimate femcee doc, this film by Academy Award Nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma, The 13th), features prominent female MCs and industry icons speaking candidly about the important historical and defining role of women in the early days of Hip-Hop to the issues they face today. MC Lyte, Yo Yo, Trina, Salt-n-Pepa, Eve, Lil' Mama, Roxanne Shanté, Missy Elliott share their individual experiences as female MCs in hip hop. From the sexualized exploitation of female artists to the trailblazing role of specific female artists responsible for paving the way for other women in Hip Hop down the line. The film also features Questlove of the Roots, Swizz Beatz, Jazze Phe, Russell Simmons on the limitations facing women in the industry to the force that is Nicki Minaj and a new wave of femcees. The film was nominated for a Black Reel Award for Best Documentary in 2011.
