Global Grad Show curator Brendan McGetrick explains his philosophy of design, how it influenced his selections for the exhibition, and what it says about design's role in the world. McGetrick will give a short presentation, followed by a discussion with Professor and Curator Richard Lombard, VCU Qatar.

Brendan McGetrick is an independent writer, curator, and designer. His work has appeared in publications in over twenty countries, including Wired, Art Review, Domus, and Vogue Nippon. In 2011, he curated Unnamed Design, a component of the 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale, in collaboration with Ai Weiwei. The exhibition received over 200,000 visitors and was named the year’s best contemporary design exhibition by the New York Times. In 2014, he co-curated Fair Enough in the Russian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, for which he was awarded a jury prize.

Richard Lombard is the Curator of the Materials Library at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, as well as an Assistant Professor in the MFA.DESIGN program. He runs a multidisciplinary resource dedicated to materials research and the advancement of materials usage in art and design; one that looks to find solutions that merge sustainability, performance, and aesthetics. Richard was one of the organisers of the 2015 Tasmeem Doha Design Festival, “3ajeeb!”, and has spoken at numerous events in the region.
