The panel will discuss the following points:

1) Shedding light on the current design consumption of wood in the ME. This is more about the conventional areas of design where wood is already in use such as architecture, product design and interior design. Who & What are the new areas and design fields expected to use wood in the industry soon in the future

3) Some thoughts on typology of wood, its aesthetics, functionality and structural capacities

4) Qualities of wood as a material in the design sector in general and what makes it a unique material to work with. Sustainability and Environmental considerations to be further explored here.

6) Taking insight from the designers on how they have either incorporated traditional crafts of other industries (such as weaving in Fashion) OR using technologies and cutting edge solutions to deliver their projects

7) The role of DRAK in bringing newness to the local & regional design industry and supporting the growth of the design scene through collaborations with AHEC & Eyes on Talents and through highlighting the work of such established and emerging/ UAE based and International designers during Dubai Design Week

Talk 2 A conversation with Pierre Charrié | 7pm

Pierre Charrié – Designer
Floriane de Saint Pierre – Moderator

Floriane will discuss with Pierre his concept and study behind his project ‘Surfaces Sonores’ on show at DRAK16 this year. How his sensorial research of everyday objects and his interest in how sound, movement, or touch involves the user in a tangible interaction with the object had led to a project that won the Agora Design Grant in 2013. Pierre will also shed some lights on how this project comes in context with DRAK16 design topic ‘Celebrating Wood’ and how initiatives such as DRAK part of Dubai Design Week sets for him as an international designer the right platform to showcase his work in the region for the first time.

About DRAK - Design Ras Al Khor

Design Ras Al Khor (DRAK) is a collective design initiative established in 2015 in Dubai and founded by four UAE based designers: Khalid Shafar, Khulood Thani, Nadine Kanso, & Tarik Al Zaharna. With the objective of drawing attention to the potential of Ras Al Khor Industrial Area – one of the oldest in the city- to become one of Dubai’s creative districts, DRAK plans to grow annually by covering different areas of design, involving more design practitioners, and becoming a design movement that encourages Design Research, Innovation, & Material Exploration.
