Silent Call is a chandelier inspired by the mosque, the crown of Islamic architecture, and the beauty of the call to prayer.

Designed by Khalid Shafar

Ground Floor, Building 7, Dubai Design District (d3)

Born in 1980 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Khalid Shafar graduated in business and worked in marketing and communication for almost seven years, before deciding to follow his passion for design and specializing in furniture and product design. In 2011, he opened his own studio in Dubai and launched his first showcase space ‘KASA’ in November 2012. His approach to design encompasses his personal expression of form, movement, emotion, and in particular, ‘the tale’ of objects.

Khalid’s installation, Silent Call, is a chandelier inspired by the mosque, the crown of Islamic architecture, and the beauty of the call to prayer. It showcases the eternal inspiration and symbiosis of art and religion, while integrating time and motion for a purposed function beyond aesthetics. He has incorporated the symbolism of the number five into this work, referencing the five daily prayer times which are one of the most important obligations of the Islamic faith.

The chandelier features the silhouettes of the domes of five iconic mosques in five countries - Russia, Malaysia, Germany, UAE, and Denmark. Each dome is resized in five different sizes, and reversed for functionality and composition. A kinetic light installation moves five times a day to adapt to each country’s time zone, synchronizing with the times of the five calls to prayer. The installation can be programmed according to its collector’s time zone and schedule.
