An exhibition curated by Khulood Thani and Fatma AlMahmoud discussing the cultural and historical significance of the date palm trees with seven Gulf-based designers and research led by Dr Sandra Piesik and ICCC.

FashCultivate was an exhibition celebrating the date palm trees (Phoenix Dactylifera) for being one of the most cherished gifts of nature and their importance throughout the history of human civilization. Date palm trees have become part of the cultural and historical identity of the Gulf Region playing an important role in the region’s economy and more.

Curated by Khulood Bin Thani and Fatma Al Mahmoud, the exhibition highlighted commissioned pieces by seven gulf-based designers’; Asma AlMazrouie, Faissal El-Malak, Hala Kiaksow, Hessa AlSuwaidi, Khalid Mezaina, Maryam Omaira and Shahd AlShehail. The designers researched the date palm tree extensively, thereby defining certain narratives, aligning them with their ideas and merging them in their final, hand-crafted results which will be on display at 1971 – Design Space.

The curators along with Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council have developed research with Dr Sandra Piesik resulting in new materials being fabricated out of the date palm trees. The findings of the research were also on show at the exhibition.

The exhibition theme was also mirrored in the accompanying, bespoke exhibition design itself, created by Sharjah-based Interior/Product Designer Alya Al Ghefli.
