About Waleed Shaalan, Design Director, French Agency for AlUla Development

Graduated as an architect in 1987 from the University of Maryland in the USA, Waleed has more than 30 years of experience in architecture, interiors and planning. Prior to joining AFALULA in 2019, Waleed was the Design Director for AREP in the Middle East. AREP, a French multidisciplinary firm with over 600 employees working in 15 countries. Waleed founded BrainStorm, an architecture, interiors and planning design studio based in Kuwait and joined forces with SSH as Design Principal. Waleed led successful collaborations working with Atelier Jean Nouvel, Cloud 9 in Barcelona, California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture. Waleed has worked with Perkins+Will in Chicago, and was selected to work in Korea in Collaboration with Junglim architects in Seoul, South Korea. Waleed has gained experience and contributed to projects in a wide variety of sectors including hospitality, mixed-use, residential commercial and masterplanning of large scale projects worldwide. In addition Waleed has lectured, conducted workshops and been on juries Architecture schools including being a judge in the World Architecture Festival in Singapore 2012.
