‘UMAYYAD – Walk with me’ is the culmination of a four-year journey to study the art of Islamic patterns that took the artist from Dubai to London, Cairo, Morocco and Cordoba in Spain. To create this installation, McKeever has used many of the geometric and biomorphic patterns from the 7th century Umayyad dynasty to produce hand-carved tiles from clay. These have been fired to 1220 degrees Celsius using a variety of glazes ranging from the azure blues of Isfahan to the vibrant ochre, teal and lemon found in Marrakesh.
