'PALM REPOSE' embodies an elegant fusion of local culture and innovative design, inspired by the traditional scenes of UAE farmers resting amid their palm-laden landscapes.
Drawing from this rich heritage, the bench pays tribute to the native palm trees by featuring a horizontally placed palm trunk as its focal point, evoking a deep connection to nature and a sense of grounded strength. The palm trunk, a symbol of resilience and perseverance, is repurposed from locally sourced trees, creating a narrative thread of sustainability. Encased within a sleek black metal frame, the natural texture and warmth of the palm trunk are beautifully contrasted, resulting in a design that feels modern yet deeply connected to the Emirati culture.
Above the palm trunk, comfortable cushions invite rest and contemplation, creating a functional yet aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture. The blend of organic and industrial materials, together with the clean lines of the metal frame, contributes to a minimalistic, contemporary design that resonates with the 'designing responsibly' ethos of this project. "Palm Repose" is more than a bench—it is a celebration of regional heritage and commitment to sustainability. Its innovative use of the palm trunk, a powerful symbol of the UAE, into an everyday functional object disrupts conventional design paradigms. The bench prototype, ready to be showcased, offers a fresh and environmentally conscious perspective on design, capturing a fragment of our cultural narrative while enhancing both indoor and outdoor spaces. In essence, "Palm Repose" is a tribute to local traditions, and an embodiment of sustainable design. This piece exemplifies a socially impactful and contextually rich contribution to local and global design conversations.
Palm Repose will be featured at the UAE Designer Exhibition, supported by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture)
