Sarah Al Mansoori
Blended traditional Emirati craftsmanship with modern technology, using Al Sadu weaving and 3D printing.
Reviving Al Sadu merged traditional Emirati craftsmanship with modern technology, celebrating the preservation and reinterpretation of UAE heritage. At the heart of the project was Al Sadu weaving—a historic technique practiced by Emirati women, symbolizing the role of craftsmanship in cultural preservation. Sarah Al Mansoori reimagined this weaving technique through 3D printing, using locally sourced wool for the woven components and recycled materials for the 3D-printed elements. This fusion of traditional and contemporary methods demonstrated how modern technology could integrate with cultural practices, illustrating the evolution of Emirati heritage.
Drawing inspiration from Bedouin tribes, the installation was crafted with Al Sadu weaving and included wooden elements engraved with traditional patterns, underscoring the connection between heritage and modern artistic expression. Overall, Reviving Al Sadu highlighted the ongoing relevance of traditional craftsmanship while embracing sustainable practices and contemporary techniques. This project was supported by the Mubadala Excellence Program.
