UNHCR & Made51
Panel discussion and presentation
MADE51, initiated by UNHCR, empowers refugees through the artisan sector. With 29.4 million refugees globally, many lose their homes and livelihoods, relying on humanitarian support. Established in 2018, MADE51 leverages the skills of refugee artisans to create job opportunities through handmade goods.
The artisan sector, worth over USD 752.2 billion, offers significant employment potential, especially in low- and middle-income countries where most refugees reside. MADE51 addresses barriers like legal restrictions and limited market access, promoting sustainable livelihoods for displaced individuals. The name "MADE" stands for Market Access, Design, and Empowerment, with "51" referencing the 1951 Refugee Convention. The session discussed how MADE51 fosters economic independence through artisan craftsmanship.
